(Also posted on NextDoor, LinkedIn) Unbelievably, there are people who are seriously proposing to tear down the Marina del Rey Freeway (S-90). Its removal would be part of the Marina Central Project.
To her credit, in her Unincorporated Communities Newsletter, 2nd District Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell acknowledges the recent discussion, and that the proposal to tear down the 90 is being submitted by Streets for All, a non-profit organization that has already submitted an application for federal funding of a feasibility study.
Mitchell writes, “While I did not sign-on as a supporter on the organization’s application to fund the feasibility study, I do support a detailed assessment with full community input that includes the lived experiences of Angelenos who reside near and regularly use the freeway before any decisions to alter the freeway can be made . . . It is important to note that, as of now and for the immediate future, there are no approved plans to alter the Marina Freeway, and the feasibility study that would be required has yet to be approved.”

Supervisor Mitchell’s comments are a sane and respectable reply. She is NOT referring to the segment as the ‘Freeway to Nowhere’. For any other political leaders that continue using that description– I will continue to recap my view, undoubtedly share by many, that all of us who traverse or are connected by the Marina del Rey Freeway (S-90) are members of communities that certainly don’t appreciate being characterized as ‘NOWHERE’ — even if that term best describes the inevitable destination of this very unpaved proposal.
